OLD & NEW/MIX & MATCH at STYLE STARTS HERE

As I wandered through Style Starts Here the other day, I found these new items by Simone Stern that grabbed my attention. Tops with a strap over one shoulder and a cute, large heart on the front met my gaze.

On another wall I found cute mini-skirts/shorts that had a tiny heart as the button closure on the front and a heart on both hips on the back.

I couldn’t help but buy a few tops with skirts to match–okay, you don’t have to match up the colors, but I like to match.

Then I realized that these simple pieces would be great mixed and matched with other items from my rather extensive collection of Simone’s clothing. I started with strapped boots that matched the outfits–sorry, I really can’t help myself sometimes. Then I added a pair of jeans or a skirt to go with the heart top and then a top that would go with the skirt or shorts.

I think I came up with some great looks, and I know that if I would let go of the matching look, I could come up with literally thousands of outfits just from what I’ve got in my inventory. Now if I could just remember to make folders for outfits before I took them off, I could sure get dressed faster.

MY PRECIOUS QUEEN

The Stevie Wonder lyrics “Isn’t she lovely, isn’t she wonderful…” come to mind when I see the February cover of Avenue Magazine. She is indeed lovely, and Ms. Janina Scarmon makes a wonderful My Precious Queen. In the magazine, you can read the story of how Agnes Finney, designer and owner of My Precious, came up with the idea for the competition. You’ll see some wonderful photos of Queen Janina, and read the words of Roland Zepp as he tells the story.

Stop by My Precious to get your issue. While you’re there, click on the sign that gives directions for entering the February competition. There is a competition each month, so if you miss February’s deadline of the 20th, you can always enter in March. If you don’t win, don’t give up. The entries each month are judged by a panel who have their own opinions about what makes the photos the best. Study the pictures of the winners, see if you can figure out why they won, and try again.

THE GRACEFUL LILY COMPETITION

Talia Lefavre of The Graceful Lily is having a competition, and the more people who enter, the bigger the prize!

The rules are pretty simple. Basically they are: Buy a current outfit from The Graceful Lily, take a photo of the outfit, upload it to the Flickr account, send a notecard to Ms. Lefavre with a copy of the picture with full permissions and a list of the dress name and any accessories. Be sure to check the directions for the way to name the card before you send it. You can enter up to three pictures and, although the rules don’t make it clear, I think she would like each picture to be of a different outfit.

Touch The Graceful Lily competition logo above for a limousine to the store. You’ll find a copy of this logo on a sign in the store, click it for the exact rules.

THE FUTURISTIC EMPRESS GOWN

When I grow up, I want to be an empress, and

I’ll commission Agnes Finney to make this just for me in RL, and

I’ll forbid all of my subjects to wear these regal collars,

mechanical wings, and

wind-up keys.

Otherwise, I’ll be a kind and generous ruler. I just want this one gown and it’s design elements for myself. Fortunately for you, I’m not an empress and I cannot keep this gown to myself in SL. Since that’s the case, I grant you all the right to purchase this gown from My Precious.

Everywhere I wear it, I get lots of positive comments–I love that! However, I haven’t decided which way I like it best–with both skirts or either one by itself–I think they are all magnificent looks.

The Empress Gown feature a white sleeveless bodice with a deep V in the front and a wider deep V in the back. The bodice is topped with a gold band that is surrounded by petal-like layers forming a stand-up collar that has the appearance of a flower. The bodice can be worn with the system skirt that is angled to form a sexy short dress. A long, flowing gown can be added for the more modest woman, or for the  more daring, the long skirt can be worn with the glitch pants. The most visually stunning part of this gown is the wings. The intricate rods, curlicues, and feathers that form the mechanical wings are truly impressive. Made in a similar pattern is the wind-up key in the back–a handy gadget to have around in case you have a tendency to run out of energy. The gown is complemented with opera length black gloves with a large cuff. You will be the envy of every gathering.

Lest you hesitate to purchase this gown because you are concerned about a high prim count, the gown with both skirts, bodice, collar, gloves, wings, and key only gives you an Avatar Response Cost (ARC) of 225 and only the collar is scripted. So although it’s quite large, any lag caused by the outfit itself is minimal. Keep your accessories to a minimum and wear hair with no script and you have it made.

DESIGNING FOR HAITI FASHION SHOW FEBRUARY 4

Some of the most beautiful models in SL have come together with some of the most talented designers to raise money to help the injured, homeless, and hungry who survived the Haiti earthquake.

There will be two benefit shows on February 4th–the first will be 12:00 PM SLT, and the second will be 8:00 PM SLT. The models will be different and the designs will be different, so you might want to see both.

All they need now is you–you wonderful, generous people of Second Life. The sim will fill up and you don’t want to miss out, so arrive early and leave scripted items in your inventory, but bring lots of Lindens, please.

(Psst…up to now I hadn’t seen any of the designs. I’ve seen some of them now and WOW they are going to be wonderful shows. They may be a bit longer than some you’ve seen, but they will be worth every minute. So come with a RL snack and make yourself comfortable. )
